Exploring Different Decorating Styles: Find Your Perfect Match

Struggling to pin point your interior design style?

At Chloe Johnston Interiors, our style is best described as transitional, blending traditional and modern elements without leaning too heavily toward either. This approach evolved as the owner, Chloé, gained more experience in the industry. Initially favoring a very industrial aesthetic, she soon realised, while working with her first interior role, that this style felt colder compared to others.

Transitional style is highly effective because it’s neither too modern, risking becoming dated quickly, nor too traditional, which can feel old-fashioned. The image illustrates how vintage pieces can be seamlessly incorporated into a more modern setting, creating an interior that feels lived-in, cosy, and unique.

You can achieve this effect with other interior styles, such as mid-century and modern. The best way to discover your preferred style is by browsing Pinterest. Search for terms like "modern interiors," "contemporary interiors," and "luxury interiors," and save the images that resonate with you. Pinterest will then suggest similar styles, helping you refine your tastes. This process is an excellent starting point for defining your personal style and planning your interior design journey.

From this, you'll start to notice recurring items or colours, which will guide you in creating a moodboard for your home. My advice is to choose your larger items first, such as the sofa and bed, as these will occupy the most space and have the greatest impact. Once these key pieces are selected, you can then choose complementary items. The last things to choose are the soft furnishings, which should enhance the space.

On a side note, one of my favourite places to shop for soft furnishings is Ellenvale Interiors. Their items are a lovely mix of modern and traditional, and very affordable! They also sell cushion combinations, which is great for those who struggle with mixing patterns.

Once you have followed the above tips, you should have a much clearer idea of where your style sits. This will help you when selecting new items for your home, allowing you to ask yourself whether each piece fits within the aesthetic you’re aiming for.
